On Advertising Champions, our host, Tony Stanol, interviews bright and engaging members of the digital advertising and media community. On this segment, Tony speaks with Rakesh Talwar of Deutsch New York.

An advertising agency that performs as a brand partner with teams that are personally vested in brand growth.

How do you define success?

At a personal level it would be by the success my teams, clients and brands attain. And that would include meeting business objectives for brands as well as career goals and goal achievement for teams and clients.

How did you get started in your field or work?

A very contrarian story since I never wanted to work in advertising. And that was 1997… But I got a break with a job at Ogilvy Mumbai, and the rest as they say is history.

What’s one thing we should know that makes your company unique?

We’re really focused on people – our clients, our teams and the audiences we create marketing communications for. And to ensure success across the board, we deliver effective solutions both at a high level, strategic brand level as well as at a more personal, social level.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in your business?

Many across the years. But the biggest was when I started out as a young immigrant trying to find a job in advertising. Trying to prove that I could – that I could communicate and be communicated with easily, could do the job as well (or better) than someone that didn’t need a visa, could be the investment that was worth the perceived risk, and finally, that I could be someone that would eventually be looked at as a leader in this industry.
